Please support S3568 and A5335, Requires cats, dogs, and ferrets used in testing to be offered for adoption, establishment of procedures for assessment and disposition of animals and penalties for noncompliance.
I am a concerned constituent in your district and urge your support for S3568, (Sen. Vin Gopal), an An Act concerning the disposition of cats, dogs, and ferrets used for testing or research to be offered for adoption when no longer needed. I firmly believe that whenever possible, animals should get a chance at a normal home life after what they have endured in testing for products, drugs, and curiosities. This act simply facilitates a relationship between New Jersey research laboratories and animal rescue organizations so that when an experiment ends and animals are no longer needed, they are given a chance of life after the lab with a New Jersey family. Currently there are no federal or state laws that cover the post-research treatment of these animals. In the last five years 13 states, including California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Virginia have all passed similar legislation resulting in many animals being adopted into loving families. In fact, this bill is simply an amendment to an already existing law that allows the post-research adoption of dogs and cats, but it adds the adoption of ferrets and adoption from private laboratories and enforcement provisions. I am humbly asking you to co-sponsor this bi-partisan bill that the citizens of New Jersey clearly already support. It embodies compassion and common sense. These animals are no different than our own family companion animals and as a taxpayer who funds much of this research, I would like to see them properly cared for. This law would proudly set a new gold standard for research ethics and animal welfare.
